A maioria das pessoas sabe que NATAL é uma palavra que significa: dia do nascimento. Mas, nascimento de quem? De qualquer pessoa! Há, até, pais que colocam o nome em filhos de Natalício e em filhas de Natalina. Tudo isso se refere ao Natal.
Agora, o Natal, essa festa mundial celebrada pelos países cristãos desde o Ocidente até o Oriente (graças à expansão do Império Romano), tornou-se a celebração do nascimento de Jesus, o Cristo, sobre o qual a religião cristã foi fundada.
O Natal, celebrado no dia 25 de dezembro como aniversário do nascimento de Jesus iniciou no século IV no Ocidente e no século V, no Oriente.
Aqui no Canadá os cristãos também têm seus costumes e tradição como em qualquer país cristão. Segundo levantamentos estatísticos de 2011 (‘vide’ Wikipedia) os cristãos representavam 67,3% da população, o que implica dizer que este, ainda, é um país cristão e de ótima recepção a imigrantes de qualquer credo religioso. Com o crescimento vertiginoso da população, pela chegada de imigrantes isto pode mudar em futuro próximo.
Em 2020 o país contava com 37 milhões de pessoas e projeta ter 40 milhões até 2030. Isto porque recebe imigrantes de braços abertos para aumentar sua população economicamente ativa. Esta abertura pacifica e proposital aos imigrantes vai, com certeza, na contramão da política europeia e estadunidense. Os imigrantes parecem estar acertando em tentar viver no Canadá o “american dream” (o sonho americano cunhado pelos EUA e que, por lá, parece nem existir mais fora das telas de Hollywood).
E o natal, como se comemora por aqui? Há tradições que se repetem em qualquer lugar do mundo cristão, como a árvore-de-natal e a ceia. Mas, há alguns costumes típicos daqui e da América do Norte, especialmente os Estados Unidos e Canadá. Vamos a elas:
1- NEVE E BONECO DE NEVE: por nevar no inverno o boneco de neve é tradição. Compra-se nos supermercados o Kit com a vestimenta completa, que você costuma ver nos filmes tipicamente natalinos.
2 – no dia 24/12 (véspera) a maior parte do comércio funciona até o horário normal de expediente (17 ou 18h), mas fecham os órgãos públicos de serviços não urgentes. Hoje pela manhã fui com Letícia à BanQ, Grande Biblioteca Nacional e Arquivos Nacionais do Quebec, porque ontem comecei a ler um livro com um tema que me fascina, “Journey of the Universe” (Jornada do Universo), de Brian Thomas Swimmi e Mary Evelyn Tucker. Demos com a “porta na cara” porque eu não sabia (nem tenho obrigação de saber porque não sou nascido ou morador daqui) que a biblioteca fecha de 24 até 27 de dezembro.
3 – ÁRVORE DE NATAL: no Canadá também se vende em lojas árvores artificiais, mas o tradicional mesmo é comprar os pinheirinhos naturais, e foi o que fizemos para seguir a tradição.
4 – CEIA DE NATAL E PRESENTES DEIXADOS EMBAIXO DA ÁRVORE DE NATAL: no Brasil fazemos aquela festança na véspera. A maioria deixa a ceia para meia-noite (há muito tempo eu, suponho que por ser meio faminto, quebrei essa tradição e convenci a galera ao meu redor a comer lá pelas 19 ou 20h. Como no Brasil, a tradição é cear em família, mas também há quem queira ir comer nos raros restaurantes que abrem para tal fim, o que nesta pandemia vai ser um pouco mais difícil.
Todo mundo come, certo?!? Os norte americanos não têm o hábito da ceia como os brasileiros, mas já colhi informações com quem vive nos EUA (quando eu e Lily estivemos em NYC, LA, LV, e Carolina do Sul) que o dia 25 é o mais especial, pelos presentes colocados pelos pais e mães (meio que às escondidas), embaixo da árvore-de-natal. As crianças, que mal dormem na noite anterior, acordam logo cedo lindamente “desesperadas” para rasgar as embalagens e se deliciarem com as novidades. É uma festa de alegria!
5 – A casinha de biscoito de gengibre ou “Gingerbread House”: encontramos nas lojas e supermercados a famosa “casinha de biscoito de gengibre”, para a família montar e comer.
6 – O SUÉTER OU PIJAMA RIDÍCULO (“UGLY SWEATER”): aqueles “sweaters” e pijamas com estampas bregas e ridiculamente lindas. Eu e Lily, por gostarmos de diferentes culturas, há muito planejávamos passar um Natal e um Halloween fora do Brasil, para fazer tudo como manda a tradição do norte da América.
A casa da minha filha, aqui em Montreal, é a ocasião perfeita. Já nos fantasiamos todos com os ‘sweaters’ ridículos e saímos pelas ruas para comprar a árvore-de-natal. O dono do posto de venda dos pinheiros naturais até pediu para tirar foto e colocou no Instagram do negócio dele.
Tento passar a quem está ao meu redor que é saudável sorrir de si mesmo. Se vê uma vergonha saudável, vamos passar! Meu pai sempre me dizia assim: – Meu filho, vive mais quem sorri mais. Cara feia e sisudez afasta as pessoas”. Vivo sorrindo para quem meu coração se abre e enquanto está aberto, já que da minha feiura não dá para curar (rs).
